Guess Who?...Karlie Kloss!

I never imagined myself doing this. Doors opened for me and I ran for it. Source

These days,  whatever magazine you flip through on the bus while you're going to work or sitting on a bench at the park on a relaxing sunny afternoon,  it's  practically impossible not to see her face. Guess who I'm talking about? Not yet? Well, here's another clue: She is only seventeen and 6 feet. tall and still managed to be the face of many advertisements such as the Marc Jacobs fragrance Lola. Yes, you're probably right by now (although you have have just known by the title :) ) she's Karlie Kloss! This American model and ballet dancer , born on August 3 1992 in Chicago, has been lately one of my favorite models.

Karlie Kloss was first discovered in St.Louis at a charity fashion show at the age of 13, and was inspired and encouraged by one of her Elementary teachers. She first signed with Elite Model Management in 2007, before switching to NEXT Model Management in 2008. Since then, she has walked for numerous designers in  international catwalks of Milan, Paris, London and New York such as Karl Lagerfeld, Valentino, Bottega Venetta, Doilce&Gabbana, Donna Karan, and Marc Jacobs.

Karlie Kloss for Numero Magazine #122, April 2010:

Vogue China February 2010
She has also appeared in many editorials including of Vogue US,  Teen Vogue, Vogue UK, W magazine, and Numero, to name a few. This American supermodel has been on the front cover of many magazines of Vogue Kore, Vogue Portugal, and I talian Vogue.  The cover of the Teen Vogue issue of May 2010 is her latest project where she is featured  in the cover story as well.
" My entire school career I've been like three feet taller than everyone in my grade. They're just now starting to grow, so I'm very happy about that!" says Karlie Kloss in Teen Vogue's cover story (source)

Obviously,  her gazelle-like legs have helped her to be known for her stand out runway walk.

She is also known for her inquisitively  arched eyebrows that make her face look interesting and give her that death stare which so many people would die for.

Kloss is aqlso the face of one of my favorite campaignsthis season, Hermes.

Overall, what are your opinions about Karlie Kloss? Do you like or dislike her? If you would like to know more about her TeenVogue's next moths' issue will probably tell you everything you want to know.

Saturday Outfit: White, White, and More White

How do you feel about wearing white? Well, before you answer why don't you look at this editorial? You might  change your mind.

As you've probably already guessed, this was my inspiration for today's  Saturday Outfit. I just love the feeling of white lace, don't you? White is such a fresh color that makes it perfect for summer. The good thing about white is that it contrasts with your skin and can make you look a bit more tanned. There are a few things to keep in mind while wearing white:

Tip # 1: You probably all know this but sometimes it might be easy to forget. Always make sure that your underwear can't be seen when you're wearing white (unless you want to, then it's up to you). It's best to wear white underwear to prevent embarrassing moments.

Tip # 2: If you're wearing pure white ( the kind which doesn't have an appearance of old) it should be perfectly clean. If you ever happen to spill a drop of red wine on your favorite white dress, an excellent way to remove it is to put the dress on really hot milk and let it rest for one day (I know, it might seem disgusting but it works). If you have one of those yellowish stains on a white piece of clothing,  rub it with hydrogen peroxide and reduce it with a bit of tub water to remove it.

And here's my outfit:

What do you think about white now? Will you wear it this summer?

Earth Day with Earth Mother.

What does Earth really mean to you? Do you care about your planet?
If you do,you probably  already know that today is Earth Day which began being celebrated 40 years ago in the United States. Now it is celebrated in most countries of the world and it's a very special day, that you can celebrate alone or with others, to show your appreciation for mother nature.

In the April 2010 issue of Vogue, Gisele Bündchen ,the richest supermodel according to Forbes with an estimate $150 million fortune, was photographed by Patrick Demarchelier after the birth of her first child, Benjamin Rein.

Besides being a model and an actress, Gisele is also an environmental activist and she shows us her greenest side on this month's issue.

Gisele has been an activist engaging many projects such as a project that she started with her family called Projeto Água Limpa to clean up the river near Horizontina. So far 25,000 trees have been replanted in the Amazonian forest with the profits of  a flip-flop collection under Gisele's name with the Brazilian firm Gerdene.

Besides working on making a earth conscious comic book called Gisele and the Green Team, Gisele is working on her desire to develop a line of pure skincare made of all-natural ingredients not tested on animals thoughtfully packed with recycled paper. The name of the line ,which includes a day cream, a night cream, and a mud mask, is Sejaa "to be" in Gisele's first language. The philosophy of the company is "To create products that not only nourish your skin, but your whole mind, body and soul". You can check it online here.

"I wanted to teach girls to love themselves and take care of their bodies. What is the first thing you see every morning? Your face! What do you put every day on your face? Cream! I have made the simplest, purest cream—an everyday cream—but it comes with an affirmation." says Gisele on an article by by Joan Juliet Buck, Vogue Contributing Editor.

What could be a better way than being inspired by what Gisele does to safe our planet? "The first is wake up in the morning and be grateful you are here, alive and healthy. And the second is: Give." says Gisele in April's issue cover story.

And remember, you are the change you want to see in the world so start now and check out 100 Things you can do to help our planet! It's never to late to make a change so start now.

Happy Earth Day!
Are you doing something to celebrate Earth Day? Do you have any ideas that people could do to help our planet? If so, don't hesitate and comment!

Saturday Outfit: From My Side of the Seashore

There is nothing I enjoy more than closing my eyes and hearing the sound of waves splash on the seashore. I could spend my day listening to that rustling sound over and over and inhaling the salty, humid air . Looking for seashells among thousands of minuscule sand grains is another thing I love to do when I'm at the beach.
Many artists, poets, and designers get inspired by the sea sometime in their life.  Since it's getting a bit warmer and I'm sure many of you are eager to go to the beach and hear the sound of waves, breath clean salty air, and pick up seashells, I thought the sea would be the perfect inspiration for today's outfit.

DIY: Floral Skirt

Lately, I've been inspired by some of the floral prints of this season's catwalk seen at Dolce&Gabbana, Erdem, and DKNY. I have made a high waisted floral skirt which is perfect for those of you who are learning how to sew and those  who want to do fast, easy DIY projects.

Inspiration:

What you'll need:
*2 meters of  a floral print fabric (Note: I only used 1.5 meters but I would recommend to buy 2 just in case)
* additional fabric for the pockets
*pins
*elastic of 5.5 cm wide (you could also use another width but make sure it's at least 4 cm)
*sewing machine
*scissors

1- The first things you want to do before you begin cutting out the fabric is to measure your natural waist and then, measure from your waist to however long you want your skirt to be ( mine is just above the knee). This fabric isn't really what I was looking for at the store but it was all they had.

2- Now carefully cut out 2 pieces of fabric which will look like rectangles. The length of the rectangle is the measurement of your natural waist, the width of the rectangle is however long you want your skirt to be. (Note: Add 2 cm to each of the measurements of the rectangle. This will help you later when you sew the seams and the hem)

3- With the additional fabric cut out 4 pockets. You can make your own pattern or use this one here

4- Take one of the pockets and pin it on the side of the skirt fabric 8 cm from the top. Take another pocket and pin it 8 cm from the top of the opposite side. Do the same with your other rectangular piece of fabric.

5- Sew the pockets to the skirt pieces 0.5 cm away from the edge.

6-Iron the pockets and press them back

7-  Put  the 2 right sides on top of each other. Now sew the two pieces of the skirt together by leaving a 1 cm margin. First start sewing from the top and then you'll go around the pocket and then you'll finish off the side of your skirt by sewing the bottom part.    (Note: Be careful!!! You need to sew around the pocket.) Do the same to the other side.

8- Turn your skirt and gently iron the seams flat.

9- Now see if you can slide your hand through the pocket.. If you can CONGRATULATIONS! You're on the right track : )

10- Sew the hem of your skirt. If you don't know how, it's really easy. First press 1 cm flat (try to do it as even as you can) then fold it over another 1 cm and pin the hem then sew it.

11- Cut  your elastic. It should be the same length as your natural waist. (Note: By using a wide elastic your skirt will you like it has a belt)

12- Sew your elastic leaving a 2 cm margin with a thread of the same color as your elastic. (Note: I would recommend to sew it 3 times so it doesn't rip when you'll wear it).

13-With the right sides facing inward, pin your skirt to the elastic.

14-As you can see, you probably have curves. So, put your needle into the fabric and try to stretch the elastic until your fabric lays flat.

15- With your left hand hold the top end and with your right hand the back end to stretch as you'll sew.  To prevent the fabric from fraying, use a zigzag stitch.

16- If some thread is sticking out like mine is, carefully cut it.

17-  Turn your skirt and  you're ready to wear it!

I hope you enjoyed this DIY! Please if you make this skirt send me the pictures, I would love to post them in my blog. Email me at: thetrendyfashionista@gmail.com

P.S.: Sorry for the quality of the images but my camera isn't great. I'm planing on buying a new one, any suggestions?
Keep in mind that the skirt looks better once you wear it. If you are using a floral print like me, I would recommend to wear it with a plain top of the color of your skirt.
